What are the benefits of joining Rotary?
Membership in a Rotary club offers a number of benefits, including:
- Effecting change within the community.
- Developing leadership skills.
- Gaining an understanding of — and having an impact on — international humanitarian issues.
- Developing relationships with community and business leaders.
Through Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect on the quality of life in its community. Programs of The Rotary Foundation offer opportunities to form international partnerships that help people in need worldwide.
Who joins Rotary?
Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of people from the community that the club serves. Whether you are vocationally active or retired, you are welcome.
How do I become a Member?
Come and visit us a few times to see how we operate and to get to know us better. During this time, we will ensure that you are provided with information about Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Huon Valley– this will assist you in deciding ‘if Rotary is for you’. Whilst you don't need to wait to be asked to come along to Rotary meetings, membership of Rotary is by invitation and if, after a few visits you wish to join the Club, your application for membership will be submitted to the members and Board of the Club. The Rotary Club will also need to identify your Vocation (Rotary Classification). This is a description of your vocation (such as Banking, Real Estate etc). Once your nomination has been completed and fully processed, then you will be invited to membership of the Rotary Club and inducted.
How much is the Annual Fee?
The annual membership fee is $240 per person for a full year (1st July to 30 June). The fee can be paid half yearly or annually and is pro-rata after 1 January each year.
What is the cost of meetings?
The Rotary Club of Huon Valley meets every Tuesday at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start. We share a meal together, whilst enjoying our meeting. The meal costs each member $25 per week.
What other costs are associated with Rotary?
All Rotary clubs have a Sergeants session (a fun “fine” session) conducted by the club Sergeant each week. The average “DONATION or FINE” is around 20 cents each. The fines are normally for “humorous indiscretions” by the members over the past week.
The Club runs a raffle at each meeting – the winner has the opportunity to find the joker on our playing card board to win the prize pool. This jackpots each week that the joker isn’t found. The cost of a raffle ticket is $2, or 3 for $5.
District Conference (Optional)
Our District Governor is required to conduct a District Conference for Rotarians and the Family of Rotary. The registration fee per attendee is generally around $150 plus your transport and accommodation. Most meals are included in the registration fee. Attendance is optional to each member, but the experience and guest speakers are always inspiring to everyone – particularly if you are in business. It is a great networking tool and an exceptional way to learn about Rotary projects.
Fellowship Activities (Optional)
There are club fellowship activities which we encourage all members and their partners and families to attend if they can. These may include bbq’s and picnics, attendance at other Club events such as Storm the Stage, bus trips and various Club fundraisers.
District Functions (Optional)
District 9830 has a number of functions during the year to which members of our Rotary Clubs are invited to attend. These may be Welcome Dinners for visiting exchange teams, District Governors Changeover Function, District Assembly, President Elect Training days, Club Newsletter project training, and celebration of International Service, and so on.
